Millionaire Thinking (First published: Sept. 2007)

My methods are not for anyone looking for instant wealth or a lazy way to generate an income. Effort is required. My philosophy runs contrary to Internet Marketing Methods which work for products, but not for professional advice. You will expend effort, but if this your life's passion you should find it to be fun, not work.

Be courageous enough to reverse your current thinking:

It won't happen by selling books alone.
It won't happen by working for someone else.
It won't happen if you're not willing to invest financially in your career.
It won't happen if you're not willing to take personal risks.
It won't happen if you hand over responsibility for your success to someone else.
It won't happen if your expertise doesn't help others move forward in their lives.
It won't happen if you work for free or turn down money.
It won't happen if you market a product rather than your advice and expertise.
It won't happen if you do what everyone else does.
It won't happen if you think small.
It won't happen if you put obstacles in your path.
It won't happen if you don't have a strategic, empire building plan.
It won't happen if you push away opportunities that lead to your success.
It won't happen if you aren't passionate about your expertise.

Here's my side of a conversation I had recently with an author, with a little editing to eliminate identifying references. Please eavesdrop.

Millionaire Thinking: There are very few authors who are really my target market, mainly because most only want to promote books, not earn an income by selling their advice and expertise. They mostly prefer to work for free to "push" books. My clients think the opposite: they would prefer to sell advice and make piles of money and let the books sell themselves, sometimes giving books away for free. This is millionaire thinking. It's a very UNpopular concept among publishers.

Contracts, not quotes: Quotes in the press are nice, but they don't pay the mortgage. The kind of campaigns I have offered are not to generate quotes, but to generate paying assignments and contracts (in other words, INCOME). When I talk about media exposure, it's to result in eventual contractual work, not freebies.

Campaigns: I have conducted empire-building campaigns for myself and my clients for more than 30 years. It's time to upgrade to a clientele who has the right stuff to self-promote... as I did. Don't say you can't afford to hire me; you can raise the funds. If I can do it, you can do it.

I've written reports on how I did it. Buy some already.

You have many options for raising money (25 ways) including private investors.

Some of the reasons why visitors come to my site

I checked yesterday's stats to see what kind of advice people were seeking which brought them to my site. I edited the list to omit off-topic items and subjects I don't cover/discuss in my mentor programs for consultants. (I didn't change the wording entered into the visitor's search box):

- how to self syndicate
- speaker materials
- hosting a talk show
- speakers contract
- webinar script
- finders fee contracts for raising capital
- speaker promotion
- contract between speaker and agency
- how to publish subscriber paid newsletters
- writing an advertisement to attract private investors
- getting your own newspaper column
- contract for speaker
- speaker agent

I have done these myself, and many more, successfully, on my own. Yes, I am my own "guinea pig." I tested all my ideas on myself first, not on paying clients. I make my mistakes on myself, not on my clients, so I don't waste their (your) money.

New article: If you think you need an agent....

I've posted a new article I wrote on my web site. It's for people who contact me telling me they need an agent to get them paying assignments and engagements. Click to read: If you think you need an agent.

Think of it as asking for a bank loan. It's harder to get a loan when you need one. When you don't need a loan the bank is calling you to offer you money. As a consultant, I didn't have to seek paid speaking, paid writing or national TV appearances; they came to me. But authors, speakers and consultants contact me, expecting me to go out and find work for them.

They want me to do it the hard way. I can't imagine why when my way is so much easier and more lucrative. Read my article then talk to me to see if you qualify for one of my 3 mentoring programs.

Can you name some celebrity experts/specialists?

I've listed some on the subtitle of this blog. Tell me some more experts that many of us would know. Here are some to get you started:

Dr. Mehmet Oz (medical health)
Heloise (household hints)
Glynis McCants (numbers)
Martha Stewart (entertaining)
Rachel Ray (meals in 30 minutes)
Ed Begley, Jr (environmental issues)

Would you post some more names that come to your mind in the Comments section below?

Let me make you a celebrity expert

Send me your questions.

My work over the past 30+ years has been packaging, polishing, and promoting experts - after having done it for myself. I became "famous" in Canada by just combining my 3 loves (education, self-promotion, and writing). Only after I became somewhat successful in the 70's and 80's, did I start to analyze what celebrity experts did to arrive at a similar position. I began conducting seminars and workshops to help other experts and specialists to take their small practice to the level of a one-person advice empire, charging $695 to $995 per person.

Now, in my 12 month, private mentoring programs I work on a one-to-one basis with new and experienced consultants who are at any of 3 levels, from beginner to empire-builder. If you want to learn all the ways you can be the next Jamie Oliver, Dave Ramsey, Suze Orman, Julia Child, Ty Pennington, or Nate Berkus. I'll teach you what you need to do, step-by-step, to:

- identify your specialized expertise.
- reformat your body of knowledge to
- identify your core message which offers solutions.
- package your knowledge into multiple advice "products".
- setting fees and prices.
- build credibility and recognition for your expertise.
- build a practice that fits your lifestyle
- become more visible and build a fan base.
- attract lucrative assignments without knocking on doors.
- avoid working for free.
- get paid to promote yourself.
- build an advice empire that provides for all your financial needs.

As soon as I complete my special report, Your Wisdom is Worth a Million! (January 15), I will be choosing 10 specialists to mentor in my methods. Preliminary information has been posted on my web site, but details will appear in January. Keep watching this blog or subscribe.

In this blog I hope to receive great questions from all of you. I may include some of my answers in the chapters I'm writing this month. Some of you may become stars in the book, and some of you, who decide to have me mentor you, will become stars in their own field of expertise.
